知っておきたいこと
砂漠で行うアドベンチャーツアー。デューンバッシング、ラクダ乗り、四輪バギー、サンドボード、伝統ショーなどが楽しめ、アラビア砂漠の広大さと美しさを体感できる。
一般的に安全だ。信頼できる会社は経験豊富なドライバーを起用し、厳格な安全基準に従って運行する。車両の安全装備も整い、各アクティビティはプロが監督する。

安くて人気なのは約4時間のデザートサファリ（ラハバブ砂漠での四輪バギー、ラクダ乗り、サンドボード付き）。より贅沢に楽しむなら、Al Khayma Campの宿泊サファリがおすすめ。デューンバッシング、ラクダ乗り、BBQディナー、ショー、スターゲイジング、個別の空調付きテントでの宿泊が含まれる。
場所にもよるが、中心部から車で約30〜45分（約15〜30マイル）が目安。交通状況とキャンプの位置で変わる。

驚きの豆知識
- ドバイでは砂漠での人工降雨（クラウドシーディング）の実験が行われてきた。降水量を増やして乾燥気候の緩和を目指す先進的な取り組みだ。
- アラビア砂漠は約90万平方マイル（233万km²）におよび、ガフ（Ghaf）の木やアラビアオリックスなど固有の動植物が生息する。
- 「Big Red（Al Hamar）」として知られる巨大砂丘は高さ約300フィート（91m）。デューンバッシングやサンドボードの名所で、熟練ドライバーは砂丘上を最高約30mph（48km/h）で走行することもある。
- 11月〜2月は大気が澄み、日の出・日の入りがとくに美しい。星空観察にも最適で、条件が良ければ最大5,000個の星が見えることも。ガイド付きツアーならさらに楽しめる。
- UAEのベドウィンは約2.1万人と推定され、一部は今も伝統的な遊牧生活を守る。ヤギ毛のテントに暮らし、ラクダやヤギを放牧し、焚き火でのパン焼きや織物づくりなど、受け継がれた知恵で砂漠を生きる。
- サファリ会社は環境配慮を強化しており、70%以上が環境負荷低減の取り組みを導入している。
- アラビア砂漠にはアラビアオリックス、サンドガゼル、砂ギツネなど多様な野生動物が生息。過去に絶滅寸前だったアラビアオリックスは、再導入により保全成功例として知られる。
